How to Install Flexible Stone Wall Panels: Complete Interior & Exterior Guide
Flexible stone wall panels (also called MCM flexible stone) install much faster than traditional stone: no wet saw, no heavy lifting, no structural reinforcement. Most projects need only construction adhesive and basic hand tools, and a two-person team can cover 80–200 m² per day. This guide combines our interior, exterior and professional workflows into one complete installation manual — from choosing the right adhesive to final inspection.
Tools and Materials
Prepare the following before starting work:
- Flexible stone wall panels (standard 1200×600 mm, also 1200×2400/2800/3000 mm big panels)
- Polymer-modified, alkali-resistant flexible tile adhesive (grey or white)
- 6×6 mm or 8×8 mm notched trowel
- Measuring tape, level and chalk line
- Utility knife (for 3 mm panels) or small angle grinder (for 4 mm+ textured series)
- Rubber roller or pressing tool, high-density sponge
- Sealant for joints (if needed)
For outdoor projects, always use weather-resistant, alkali-resistant adhesive to prevent efflorescence (white staining).
Suitable Wall Surfaces
Flexible stone panels bond to most solid, stable surfaces:
- Concrete and cement plaster
- Brick
- Interior gypsum board
- Existing tile (after preparation)
- Metal panels (with primer)
Surface Preparation
Preparation decides bonding strength — it is the make-or-break step, especially outside. Clean the wall and remove dust, oil and loose material. Remove weak paint layers, repair cracks and holes, and level uneven areas. The surface must be dry before installation.
Adhesive Selection
Choose an adhesive designed for heavy wall coverings. Polymer construction adhesive works for most interior projects; cement-based tile adhesive suits mineral surfaces; exterior walls require weather-resistant adhesive. Always follow the curing instructions from the adhesive manufacturer.
Installation Steps (Interior)
1. Plan the layout
Measure the area and mark guidelines to keep lines straight. Start from the bottom and work upward.
2. Apply the adhesive
Spread the adhesive evenly with the notched trowel to create grooves. Work in small sections so the adhesive does not skin over.
3. Position and press the panel
Place the panel onto the adhesive, align it with the level, then press firmly — a rubber roller gives full-surface contact.
4. Continue panel by panel
Butt joints tight for a seamless stone look. Check alignment every row.
5. Finish edges and joints
Where required, tool sealant into the joints and clean excess adhesive with a damp sponge before it cures.
Cutting the Panels
Panels cut cleanly on site: measure the size, mark the cutting line on the back, and cut slowly with a sharp utility knife (3 mm) or angle grinder (4 mm+ textured series) to protect the backing layer.
Installing on Curved Surfaces
The 3 mm flexible body bends around columns, arches and rounded walls that rigid stone cannot follow. Apply the adhesive to both the substrate and the panel back, then form the panel gradually from the center outward and hold it in place while the adhesive grabs.
Exterior Wall Installation
Exterior facades demand a balance of look and performance. Minbang MCM flexible stone weighs only 4.5–6 kg/m² (no structural reinforcement needed), expands and contracts with the building to prevent cracking, and is certified EN 13501-1 Class A2-s1, d0 for high-rise compliance.
For exterior substrates, remove all loose render, repair and level the base, and confirm the wall is sound and load-bearing before work. Apply the alkali-resistant adhesive full-face with the notched trowel, install panel by panel with tight joints, and roll-press each panel. For project managers: check adhesion coverage, joint alignment and edge sealing at each stage — most facade failures come from skipped substrate preparation, not from the panel itself.
Common Problems and How to Avoid Them
- Panels not holding: dusty or weak surface — clean and prime before installation.
- Visible white staining: non-alkali-resistant adhesive outdoors — use polymer-modified alkali-resistant adhesive.
- Uneven joints: no layout lines — chalk guidelines and check with a level every row.
- Edge lifting: adhesive skinned over — work in smaller sections.
Maintenance After Installation
Installed panels need almost no maintenance: wash with water and a neutral detergent when dirty. Do not use strong acids. Re-check exterior sealant joints once a year.
