Massif Stone Panel

A dense, fine-cracked rock face at the scale of a hand, repeated across the wall. It is the quietest of the rough textures and the one that looks most like a real stone wall from two metres away.

Technical data sheet, MBCJY (PDF, 0.7 MB)·Colour card, 106 surfaces in four series (PDF, 10.4 MB)

The pattern is a massif surface: not shelves, not peaks, but a fine network of cracks and small steps, 10 to 40 mm across, at shallow depth. The colour is a grey-brown that goes warmer in the recesses, which is what real weathered limestone does.

Thirteen millimetres and 10 kg on a single 1100 × 2850 size. The depth is there for the crack network to hold a shadow at a shallow angle; it is not a dramatic relief, and that is the point. It is a wall for a room where the stone should be present but not the subject. Specified as a stacked stone panel on massing walls and lift cores, where the block courses have to look structural.

Lobby, then corridor

The lobby is a full-height run in the grey-brown, with a reception desk in oak in front of it and no other finish on the wall. The corridor is the same sheet in a corridor with downlights at 1.5 m, where the fine cracks give the wall something to do without making it busy.

Massif Stone installed on a lobby wall

Installed, massif stone

Good for

  • Lobby and corridor walls
  • Walls behind a reception desk
  • Restaurant walls where the stone is background
  • Exterior walls on a drained frame, if the exterior face is specified

Not for

  • Feature walls that need drama; this is a background stone
  • Small rooms, where the crack network reads as noise
  • Anywhere it will be pressure washed

Grey-brown and grey

Two in stock: the grey-brown in the shot and a cooler grey. A cream can be made to order. The grey-brown is the one that reads as real stone; the cool grey reads as concrete with a pattern on it.

Fitting it

Four steps, and the third one is the one that goes wrong.

01 SurfaceFlat to 3 mm over 2 m, dry, dust free. Prime porous substrates.
02 AdhesivePolymer adhesive, notched trowel, full bed. Not dots.
03 Set outWork from a datum line, not the floor. Dry-lay one row first.
04 JointButt tight, or a 2 mm shadow gap. Roll the face after fitting.

Questions we get asked

Is it a deep texture?

Moderately. The steps are 3 to 5 mm, on a 13 mm sheet. The depth is for shadow, not for drama.

Can it be used next to real stone?

Yes, and it is one of the few here that can. The scale of the crack network matches a real limestone wall at two metres.

How is it fixed?

Adhesive on a flat substrate. At 10 kg/m² it does not need a frame unless the wall is uneven.

Does it come in a bigger sheet?

1100 × 2850 is the mould size. Larger walls are made up from more sheets with the joints broken across the pattern.
