Rongji Stone Panel

Stone worked with a scraper rather than a chisel: long diagonal sweeps, torn where the tool jumped, and a surface that looks more like set plaster than like rock.

The pattern came off a sample of grey stone that had been finished with a wide scraper, which is a finish you see on Venetian plaster and almost never on stone. The sweeps run across the sheet at about 30 degrees, 40 to 100 mm wide, and each one tears a little at the end.

Fifteen millimetres and 10 kg on a 1160 × 2950 sheet. This is the deepest press in the range, and the reason is the sweep: a 40 mm wide tool mark needs 15 mm of material to stand in, or it reads as a scratch. Two people to hang, and a flat wall behind it. Bought as a decorative stone panel for gallery walls and stairwells, and at 15 mm the thickest press we run.

A tool mark, not a texture

The thing that makes this one convincing is that the sweeps are not parallel and not the same width. A machine pattern would give you a consistent 60 mm band at a consistent angle; here the tool wandered, the angle changes by ten degrees across the sheet, and some sweeps stop halfway.

Close-up of the mid-grey scraped stone face: the trowelled scrapes and the torn edges

Good for

  • Gallery and museum walls
  • Stairwells and landings
  • Hotel lobbies with a skylight
  • Walls where a plaster finish is wanted but durability is not negotiable

Not for

  • Small rooms; the sweeps need four metres
  • Anywhere the wall will be seen close up and touched, because the torn edges are sharp
  • Floors

Grey, and two earths

Three: the mid grey in the shot, a warm earth and a chalk. On a scraper finish the grey is the most convincing, because it is the colour that a real scraped limestone would be.

02 AdhesivePolymer adhesive, notched trowel, full bed. Not dots.
03 Set outWork from a datum line, not the floor. Dry-lay one row first.
04 JointButt tight, or a 2 mm shadow gap. Roll the face after fitting.

Questions we get asked

Is the scrape a real tool mark?

It is a mould taken off a real scraped sample, so the tears and the changes of angle are the original ones rather than a drawn repeat.

Why 15 mm?

The tool mark needs depth to sit in. At 8 mm the same pattern reads as a surface scratch rather than a sweep.

How heavy is a sheet?

A 1160 × 2950 at 10 kg/m² is about 34 kg. Two people, and a frame if the wall is not flat.

Can it be used outside?

Not recommended. The sweeps hold water on a vertical wall, and the colour is interior grade.
