Mini Line Stone Panel

The finest pitch in the range: lines about 5 mm apart, cut to a constant depth, on a sheet that still bends. From three metres it is a soft vertical haze; from three hundred it is a comb.

Fine fluting is usually the first thing to look cheap, because a mould cannot hold a 5 mm pitch over three metres without the ribs wandering. This one holds it: the lines are straight from end to end of a 3000 sheet, and the depth is constant enough that the shadow does not pulse along the wall.

Five millimetres thick, 6 kg, and flexible enough to take a 500 mm radius. The pitch is the reason it is specified: at 5 mm the wall stops reading as panelling and starts reading as a material, which is what a retail interior usually wants behind a product. Specified as a fluted wall panel when the drawing calls for something quieter than a 20 mm rib, most often on a retail wall behind product.

Straight over three metres

The test is a raking light along the sheet. Any wave in the pitch shows as a dark band where the ribs crowd, and you can see in the texture shot that they do not: the spacing is even from edge to edge, which is what the steel mould buys you over a hand-cut sample.

Good for

  • Retail interiors behind product displays
  • Hotel corridors with close-spaced downlights
  • Reception desks and joinery faces, where a 5 mm pitch wraps a radius
  • Ceilings, if the grid is set out to the flute lines

Not for

  • Exterior walls in direct sun; the fine ribs move with heat
  • Anywhere it will be seen from less than half a metre and touched
  • Wet rooms without an extract fan

Ivory, grey, black

Three on the card and a fourth on request: the ivory in the main shot, a warm grey, a near-black, and a sand. The black at this pitch is almost a texture rather than a colour, which is why it gets used on whole walls rather than as an accent.

Fitting it

Four steps, and the third one is the one that goes wrong.

01 SurfaceFlat to 3 mm over 2 m, dry, dust free. Prime porous substrates.
02 AdhesivePolymer adhesive, notched trowel, full bed. Not dots.
03 Set outWork from a datum line, not the floor. Dry-lay one row first.
04 JointButt tight, or a 2 mm shadow gap. Roll the face after fitting.

Questions we get asked

How fine is the pitch exactly?

About 5 mm between line centres, with a 1.5 mm round on each rib. On a 1200 sheet that is roughly 240 lines.

Does it moiré on camera?

On a phone at two metres, sometimes. On a camera at 50 mm, no. If the wall is going to be photographed for a campaign, the wider pitches are safer.

Can it be cut on site?

With a fine-tooth blade and a straight edge, yes. Cut from the back so the ribs do not chip at the cut line.

Is the depth constant across a 3000 sheet?

Within half a millimetre, which is the tolerance the mould was cut to.
