Herringbone Weave Panel

Herringbone, at the scale of a hand-woven panel. 1160 × 2300, which is the size of the mould and also a sensible size for a bathroom wall.

The weave is a classic two-and-two herringbone with a soft, slightly irregular strand. In the catalogue it is chalk white, which makes the pattern almost entirely about shadow — at noon in a white room the wall goes nearly flat, and by five o’clock the herringbone is unmistakable.

The sheet is smaller than the rest of the series because the pattern is the largest. Scale the weave up to a 1200 mm repeat and the strands read as planks, not as a weave, so the mould was cut at 1160 and the pattern kept at the right size for a wall you stand next to.

A weave you can count

Each diagonal band is about 30 mm wide, which means at 1:1 you can count the individual crossings without leaning in. That is a coarser scale than Cross Weave and a finer one than the carved wood patterns, and it is the reason this one works on a small wall.

Herringbone Weave texture at 1:1, 30 mm diagonal bands

Good for

  • Bathrooms, cloakrooms and small feature walls
  • Bedroom headboard walls, where the pattern is seen from a metre away
  • Retail display niches and shelving backs
  • Ceilings in small rooms, since the lighter pattern does not close the space down

Not for

  • Very large walls, where a 1160 mm sheet means a lot of joints
  • External facades, because the joint count makes a drained cavity expensive
  • Anywhere a 3000 mm sheet is needed to avoid a visible join

Questions we get asked

Why is this sheet smaller than the others?

The pattern scale. At 1160 × 2300 the weave reads at roughly the size of a real woven panel; blow the same pattern up to 3000 mm and it stops looking woven.

Can I butt two sheets together invisibly?

Nearly. The pattern runs continuously across a butt joint if you keep the sheets the same way up, and the joint disappears at about a metre. Closer than that you can find it.

Is white the only colour?

White is the stock colour and the one that suits the pattern. A warm sand and a pale grey are made to order at 300 m².

Will it work in a wet room?

Yes with a tanked substrate and a sealed face. The weave holds water in the low points if it is left wet, so slope the ceiling away from the shower and wipe the wall down.

How many sheets for a standard bathroom?

A 2.4 × 2.4 m wall takes two sheets with a 80 mm cut, so three sheets covers a small bathroom with waste.
