Rattan Weave Panel

Cane webbing, cast in mineral powder. The same over-and-under, the same shadow in the gaps, none of the sag you get when a woven panel spans more than a metre.

Rattan Weave is a straight herringbone: strands running at 45°, crossing in pairs, with the high points rounded off the way a real cane peel is. Four colourways — sand, chalk white, clay and slate — and the slate one is the surprise, because it reads as woven linen rather than as cane.

Real cane dries out, yellows and sags between fixings. This does none of that, which also means it will not move the way a woven sheet moves. If the design depends on the material flexing, this is the wrong product; if it depends on it staying flat for ten years, it is the right one.

Shadow, not colour

What makes a weave read as a weave is the gap, not the strand. At 4.5 mm the relief is deep enough that a raking light puts a genuine shadow into every crossing, and that is the whole effect. Flat-lit, the pattern almost disappears.

Four years in a doughnut shop

The shopfront shot is a real installation: the panel wraps the opening and takes the door swing, so it gets knocked every day. The navy-grey frame in the second shot is the slate colourway in a bar, where the weave was specified because the client wanted textile without the acoustics of textile.

Installed, rattan weave

Good for

  • Shopfronts, door reveals and anywhere the panel takes knocks
  • Restaurant and bar interiors that want textile without the cleaning problem
  • Furniture fronts, wardrobe doors and joinery panels
  • Columns, because the weave wraps and the pattern does not break at the corner

Not for

  • Splashbacks directly behind a hob, unless sealed
  • Walls where the client expects the smell and give of real cane
  • Tight external radii below 150 mm

Wrapping a corner

The 4.5 mm sheet folds to a 150 mm radius without the weave distorting, which is tighter than the other woven patterns in the range. On a square column the four corners take the curve and the flat faces take the sheet, so there is no trim anywhere on the column.

Four colourways

Sand is the catalogue colour and the safest. Chalk white is nearly colourless and lets the shadow do the work. Clay is warmer than it looks on screen. Slate is the one to specify if the room already has a lot of wood.

Questions we get asked

Does it look like plastic cane?

At arm’s length, no: the strands have a rounded, slightly irregular profile and the shadow does the rest. At 200 mm, someone who works with cane will know within a second.

Can it be used in a bathroom?

Yes, on a wall, with the surface sealed. The weave holds dust in the low points, so avoid it directly beside a shower where soap scum will collect.

How does it compare with real cane webbing?

Real cane needs a frame, sags over about 900 mm, and yellows. This is a solid sheet at 4.5 mm that glues to a wall and stays flat, which is why it gets used on walls rather than on chair backs.

Is the pattern directional?

Yes. The herringbone runs one way down the sheet, so keep the sheets in the same orientation or the wall will show a seam that is not a seam.

What is the fire rating?

A2-s1,d0 to EN 13501-1 on a non-combustible substrate, which is what most commercial fit-outs ask for in a circulation area.
