Travertine Mosaic Panel, Diagonal
The same mosaic turned forty-five degrees, so the grid becomes a field of diamonds. It is a grey stone rather than the cream, which changes the room more than the rotation does.

Technical data sheet, MB-TMM (PDF, 0.6 MB)·Colour card, 106 surfaces in four series (PDF, 10.4 MB)
Diagonal square pieces with a raised centre, about 70 mm across the diagonal, set on a diamond grid with a 3 mm gap. The surface is a grey travertine with a fine cloud, and the relief is shallow, about 2 mm, so the pattern is geometric rather than rocky.
Six millimetres and 7 kg on 1200 × 3000. It is the lightest of the mosaic group and the only one that bends to 400 mm, which makes it the one for a curved bar front or a rounded shower recess. On a flat wall, the diamond grid needs the wall plumb or the pattern leans. Bought as a mosaic wall tile for small bathrooms, because the diagonal makes the room read wider than the plan says.
A grid you can read at an angle
Diamonds do something a square grid cannot: they stay legible when you look along the wall rather than at it. In a corridor, that means the pattern does not disappear as you walk past, which is the usual complaint about mosaic.

Good for
- Bathroom walls and shower recesses
- Curved bar fronts, down to a 400 mm radius
- Corridors, where the diamond stays legible along the wall
- Feature panels in a small room
Not for
- Floors
- Walls that are out of plumb, because a diamond grid shows a lean
- Large flat walls, where a 70 mm module is too small
Grey and cream
Two: the grey in the shot and a cream. The grey is the one for bathrooms and bars; the cream goes into residential work where a diamond grid in grey would be too strong.

Questions we get asked
Does the diagonal need a particular start?
Start from the centre of the wall and work out, so the cut pieces are equal at both ends. Start at a corner and the pattern runs out at the other end.
Can it be used on a curved wall?
Yes, down to about a 400 mm radius at 6 mm thick. It is the most flexible of the mosaic group.
Is the centre of each diamond raised?
About 2 mm. It is enough to catch a light without collecting dust.
How does it compare with the square mosaic?
Same idea, rotated, in a cooler colour and with a shallower relief. The square reads as tile; this reads as a pattern.
