Travertine Post Panel, Convex Rib

The same post wrap with a convex rib instead of a groove. Half-round reeds at 60 mm centres, so the column catches the light on every rib and reads as a turned stone pier.

Each rib is a half-round about 40 mm wide on a 60 mm module, so there is a flat band between them. The travertine face is the same cream as the flat version, with the pores running across the ribs rather than along them, which is what happens when you press a horizontal pattern into a vertical form.

Seven millimetres and 7.5 kg, 1200 × 3000. The convex rib is more forgiving than a groove on a column that is not perfectly square, because the ribs hide a 2 to 3 mm variation at the corner. On a badly out-of-square post, this is the profile to use. It is bought as honed travertine for anything at hand height, because a rib with a sharp edge chips and a convex one does not.

Light on every rib

A convex rib gives you three tones where a groove gives you one: a highlight on the crown, a mid-tone on the flank and a shadow in the gap. On a column in a corridor with downlights at 2 m centres, that means the pier lights up in stripes as you walk past it.

Good for

  • Hotel corridor columns
  • Bar and restaurant posts
  • Lift surrounds
  • Columns that are slightly out of square, because the rib hides it

Not for

  • Round columns; the flat sheet will not follow the curve, use Post-100
  • Walls, where the rib reads as a radiator
  • Exterior columns without the exterior face

Cream and sand

Two: the cream in the shot and a sand. A convex rib in a dark colour reads as a machined metal profile, which is a different product; keep it pale.

Fitting it

Four steps, and the third one is the one that goes wrong.

01 SurfaceFlat to 3 mm over 2 m, dry, dust free. Prime porous substrates.
02 AdhesivePolymer adhesive, notched trowel, full bed. Not dots.
03 Set outWork from a datum line, not the floor. Dry-lay one row first.
04 JointButt tight, or a 2 mm shadow gap. Roll the face after fitting.

Questions we get asked

Can it wrap a round column?

Not this profile. A round column needs the Post-100, which has larger ribs and enough give in the sheet to follow a 600 mm radius.

How do the ribs meet at a corner?

Mitre on the flat band between two ribs. Mitre on a rib and the corner shows a seam.

Is it the same stone as the travertine wall panel?

Same face, same colour card. The only difference is the profile.

Why 60 mm centres?

It is the largest module that still reads as fluting on a 300 to 400 mm post. Wider and it looks like a moulding.
