Travertine Post Panel, Flat Grooved

A post wrap, drawn flat. Thin vertical grooves at 90 mm centres, crossed by a horizontal joint line, so a square column can be clad in four pieces and read as a stacked stone pier.

The panel is a cream travertine with a narrow groove cut at 90 mm centres, plus a horizontal line every 600 that reads as a course joint. It is designed for square posts and pilasters: four pieces to a 400 mm column, with the corner on the groove.

Seven millimetres and 7.5 kg, on a 1200 × 3000 sheet, which cuts into four 300 panels for a typical post with almost no waste. The grooves are 3 mm wide and 2 mm deep, so they read as a joint at a metre and disappear at three, which is the right behaviour for a column in a restaurant. Ordered as travertine cladding for columns and piers, where the grooves give the shadow line a shadow gap would have cost.

A course joint, not a tile

The horizontal line is what makes it read as a pier rather than as a fluted box. It is shallow, about 2 mm, and it is not continuous with the groove pattern, which means it can be set at the height that suits the room rather than at the height the mould dictates.

Good for

  • Square columns and pilasters in restaurants and hotels
  • Lift surrounds and door reveals
  • Fireplace piers and chimney breasts
  • Anywhere a stack-bond stone pier is wanted without the weight

Not for

  • Round columns; use the Post-C or Post-100 profile
  • Exterior columns without the exterior face
  • Walls, where the 90 mm module reads as boarding

Cream and grey

Two: the cream in the shot and a light grey. Post work rarely wants a colour statement; the pattern is doing the work.

Questions we get asked

How many pieces for a column?

Four for a 400 mm square post, cut from one 1200 sheet, so there is very little waste.

What is the difference between Post-N, Post-C and Post-100?

N is flat with grooves. C has convex ribs. 100 has large convex ribs at a 100 mm module for bigger columns.

Can the horizontal joint be moved?

The mould has it at 600. On a 2.6 m column that gives four courses and a top course cut short, which is how a real pier would be built.

Does it need a corner trim?

No. Mitre the two pieces on the groove line and the corner disappears.
